Prep boys basketball: Osbourn wins season opener over Hylton

By: Ben Trittipoe

Last season, the Osbourn boys basketball team used a relentless pressure defense and an opportunistic, fast-breaking offense to carry it to the first state playoff berth in school history. The Eagles opened their 2011-12 campaign Monday and it appears the formula will remain the same. Osbourn broke the game open with a 14-3 run to start the third quarter and held off a Hylton rally in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bulldogs, 72-63, in a non-district contest in Manassas.

Corey Bedford led Osbourn (1-0) with 21 points, while Robert Carter added 18 for the Eagles. Chidozie Omile posted his third consecutive “double-double” to lead Hylton (2-1) with 17 points and 17 rebounds, and Treyon Crawford added 16 points.

Osbourn took a 51-39 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs rallied behind Crawford (nine points), Omile (five) and Lester Daniels (nine points, all in the fourth), who combined for all but one of Hylton’s 24 points in the final period. Crawford’s three-point basket with 4:56 remaining brought the deficit under 10 points, and a free throw and layup by Daniels got the Bulldogs within 59-53 a minute later.

But that was as close as Hylton would get. The Bulldogs twice more cut the Osbourn lead to six, the last at 68-62 with 43 seconds left, but the Eagles hit four of eight free throws while Hylton missed several shots down the stretch.

Hylton Rests Starters in Loss to Forest Park

By Gresham Harkless

The Hylton Bulldogs (14-4) fell to the Forest Park Bruins (12-8) 59-46 on Senior Night Tuesday. As each of the Bulldog seniors were escorted by their families on to the court, they were applauded by the Hylton crowd. Hylton’s leading guard Kendall Hargrove did not play in the game, and Hylton head coach Smith rested his star players for most of the game.

With members of a small crowd of Hylton students shouting “It’s a scrimmage,” the Bruins led for most of the game in a sloppy game for both teams. Hylton played most of its players in the game, and 10 players were able to score in the game. Junior guard Treyon Crawford logged heavy minutes and directed the Bulldogs offense throughout most of the game along with senior guard Carl Frazier Jr.
